A recent National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) survey revealed that a majority of prospective homebuyers rate energy-efficient features, such as above-code insulation and ENERGY STAR-compliant appliances and building products (including windows, doors, and HVAC systems), as essential or desirable. While the consumer desire for energy-efficient features isn’t new, it has only grown in importance in recent years.

Connecting Efficiency to Affordability, Comfort
According to NAHB’s “What Home Buyers Really Want Survey”:
- 89% of home buyers rated ENERGY STAR windows as essential or desirable
- 86% want ENERGY-STAR-rated appliances
- 83% value a home’s overall energy efficiency rating
- 72% ranked above-code insulation as a priority
Energy-efficient features consistently rank among the top 10 most-wanted features in new homes because consumers understand that energy efficiency means lower utility bills. Additionally, they recognize that an energy-efficient home is better for the environment and that features such as improved insulation, windows, and HVAC systems create a more comfortable living space. Buyers are also aware that energy-efficient homes tend to have higher resale values.
Why It Matters
Energy-efficient homes are no longer a luxury but an expectation for buyers. Builders who market the energy-efficient features of their new construction homes continue to have a strong market advantage over those who don’t.
